Enjoyed the summer nature in day-camps

　エコプラスは、この8月、新潟県南魚沼市で4つのデイキャンププログラムを実施しました。新型コロナの第7波の中で、せめて日帰りで自然を楽しんでもらおうと企画し、計39人の小中学生が、森の中や池、川で、たっぷり遊びました。

In this August, ECOPLUS organized four day-camp programs in Minamiuonuma, Niigata. Those were planned to provide opportunities to touch and feel the nature in this seventh wave of COVID-19. In total 39 elementary and junior high students experienced fun in the beech forest, in a pond and in a fresh stream.

　キャンプは、前半2回が同市五日町地区の天池キャンプ場、後半2回は清水地区の巻機山麓キャンプ場を舞台に実施しました。

　Earlier two camps were held at Amaike camping site in Itsukamachi area and later two were held at Makihata Ssnroku camping site in Shimuzu area.

　8月11、12日の天池キャンプ場では、前半に自然観察、後半がカヌー体験。キャンプ場裏手にある、ブナ林などを、地元の専門家深澤和基さんの案内で歩きました。深澤さんに用意していただいた地図付きの資料を見ながら歩くと、ブナだけでなく、いい香りがするクロモジや触るとかぶれるウルシなど、いろいろな植物を観察することが出来ました。地面を走り回るカナヘビを捕まえて観察することも出来ました。

On August 11 and 12, at Amaike site, we had nature observation in the morning and canoe class in the afternoon. The nature specialist, Mr. FUKAZAWA Kazuki kindly prepared observation note for each of participants. With the note, we walked through the forest with beech trees. Kids learned different types of plants, like, one has good smell called “Kuromoji,” or a poisonous one called “Urushi.” Tiny lizards were caught by participants and could be observed closely.

　8月18、19日の清水では、自然観察と沢遊びをしました。標高700mの巻機山麓は、周辺に人家もなく、自然そのもの。キャンプ場の広場には無数のアキアカネが舞い、バッタやチョウがいて、子どもたちは網を持って走り回りました。自分たちで削った棒にソーセージを刺して火にあぶり、ホットドックにしてお昼ご飯。午後は、沢に入って、山からの冷たい水の中で、楽しみました。最後には、村の人たちが昔から遊んだ、弓づくり。木の枝を曲げて弓にし、取ってきたススキの茎を矢にして飛ばしてみました。

On August 18 and 19, students experienced nature observation and stream walk. At the elevation of 700 meters without any houses around, the nature was so rich even in the camping area. Uncountable number of red dragonflies, many grasshoppers and butterflies filled the area. Children were running around with nets. For lunch, they sharpened sticks to grill sausages on fire. In the afternoon, they spent time in the stream with snow melted water from the Mt. Makihata. At the end, they played with traditional bow and arrows. The bow was made out of small branches and arrows were stems of pampas grass.

　いずれのプログラムでも、子どもたちは、もっと遊びたかった、虫取りを続けたかったと、名残惜しそうに帰って行きました。南魚沼市在住の子どもたちばかりでしたが、「住んでいるすぐそばに、こんな場所があるなんて知らなかった」と話し、自然に触れ合う機会を存分に楽しんでもらったようです。

In all four programs, children were heading back to home, saying like “Wanted to keep catching insects more.” Although all of those participants are from Minamiuonuma city, they did not have much of experiences playing in the nature. The programs looked like good opportunity to feel and touch to the natural environment.

自然をとことん感じた「雪ざんまいキャンプ」

　エコプラスは、2021年3月20日～22日に、新潟県南魚沼市の巻機山（1,967m）中腹の清水地区で、「雪ざんまいキャンプ」を行いました。新型コロナウイルスの対応のため、ご縁のある高校生、大学生、社会人13人が、事前の自主隔離やPCR検査を経て参加しました。

　今回は、前日19日の準備段階からほとんどの人たちに加わってもらい、3m前後の雪が残る清水地区に移動。設営作業を行いました。

　青空に白い山がそびえ立つ見事な光景の中、本部テントの資材や薪をソリに積み、かんじきを履いて、設営場所に引き上げました。集落の長老3人が慣れた手つきで立ち木にロープを通してブルーシートを張ります。手際の良さにみんなびっくり。ドラム缶を切ったコンロ３基が置かれ、それを囲む椅子が雪を掘って作られました。

　20日も午前中は快晴。みんなが一列になって雪を踏みしめて平らにして、そこに宿泊用のテントを設置しました。コロナ対策で、テントの収容人数を減らしたため、全部で7張。

　お昼は、雪面を掘って作った雪のテーブルを囲んでおにぎり。午後はトイレ作り。近くの杉林の中に、男子チームは、周りをレンガ塀のように雪で囲みました。トイレに向かう斜面には階段を作り、両脇には杉の葉を植えて、おしゃれな小路に仕上がりました。一方、女子チームは、木と葉で念入りに目隠しを作り、飾りのついたこじゃれたトイレに。ちなみに、手とおしりは雪で洗います。

　雪の中では、工夫次第で、テーブルも、風よけの壁も、食器棚も、何でも作れてしまいます。

　夕方には小雨が。2つのチームに分かれて、それぞれ一斗缶を改造したコンロ2つを使って、コメを炊き、おでん風ミルクシチューを作りました。夜になると、雨風が強くなり、ごーごーという風の音を聞きながら眠りました。

　21日は、地元の阿部和義さんの案内で集落の後にある、「後山」へ。集落を雪崩から守るために、絶対に切ってはならないというおきてがある場所。樹齢百年以上のブナの巨木が並ぶ斜面を歩きました。開けた場所では、ビニールシートを尻にしいてそりをしたり、鹿やウサギの糞、熊が木に登った爪痕を観察したり。カモシカがすぐ下を歩いているのを、目撃出来た人もいました。

　夕方近くからは寒冷前線の通過で、強風とともに本降りに。その中でも、もう自由に火を操れるようになったみんなで、夕食を準備。地元からはイノシシとシカの肉が入った大鍋の差し入れも登場しました。

　雨風はその後も続き、テントのフライシートが飛ばないか、気を遣いながらの夜となりました。

　明け方になると、今度は小雪が舞う状態。朝食後に、ススで真っ黒になった鍋を木灰と杉の葉で磨き上げるなどして撤収作業を進めました。

　自然を体験するだけではなく、暮らしを組み立てることが、エコプラスのキャンプの大きな目的です。地元のみなさんからも、その地で積み重ねられてきた暮らしの知恵を学びます。

　参加したみなさんからは「自然の中で暮らすことでこんなにも知らない世界があることが分かった」「雪だけでこんなにもいろんなことが出来る」「普段の暮らしが、どれだけ自然を切り捨てて営まれているかを感じた」などのコメントが寄せられています。

ECOPLUS conducted snow camp from March 20 to 22 in a mountainous village, Shimizu in Niigata, Japan with 12 participants including high school, university students and young adults. TAKANO Takako, executive director of ECOPLUS, Shimizu villagers and 2 other staff supported the program.

　2020年3月20日から22日まで、新潟県南魚沼市清水地区で、恒例の「雪ざんまいキャンプ」を開催しました。参加したのは高校生から大学生、社会人まで12人。高野孝子代表理事ほか2人のスタッフ、地元集落のみなさんと一緒に、雪の中での2泊3日を存分に楽しみました。

Due to extraordinary warm weather condition of this winter, snow was far less than normal. We only had 50cm to 1 meter of snow at the filed where it should have more than 2 meters. However, wet snow and strong wind suddenly came when the participants began to set up the tents, toilets, the fireplace and other facilities.

　この冬が異常に暖かだったことから、例年なら2m以上の雪がある現地も、50センチから1mほどの雪しかなく、一部は地面がむき出しになっているところまでありました。みんなで調理場やトイレ、テントなどの暮らしの環境を整えようとした矢先、強烈な風交じりの雪が降り始めて、一気に冬に戻ったようになりました。

Finally they set up the living space. Creative boys’ and ladies’ toilets were built in snow decorated with leaves and trees. Cooking was also done on the snow. They cut vegetables on the snow table and made fire on the snow.

　出来上がった男女別々のトイレは、それぞれ雪や落ちていた木の枝を使ってアートに仕上げられていました。料理も雪の上。雪の上で野菜を切り、雪の上で火を付けて調理をしました。

On day 2, we enjoyed snow shoe hike under the blue sky. Using traditional Japanese snow shoes, called “Kan-Jiki,” we started walking. On the surface of snow, many animal footprints were spotted. The villager, ABE Kazuyoshi, taught us they were raccoon’s or marten’s. We also found marks of hares, squirrels and others.

　2日目は、晴天のもと、かんじきハイクを行いました。日本の伝統的なかんじきをそれぞれはいて、山の中に。雪の上にはあちこちに動物の足跡がついています。地元の阿部和義さんが「あれはタヌキ」「こっちはテン」と教えてくれます。ほかにも、ウサギやリスなどの足跡を見ることができました

During three days, we spent time on the snow; cooking, eating, talking, playing, sleeping, and so on. Villagers offered us a big pod of wild bore stew and wild deer curry and rice. They talked about life and nature now and then. We concentrated our senses on listening, watching, communicating, without being annoyed by modern devices. By simply using time just for living, participants had rich and dense learning experiences.

　3日間、私たちは雪の上で、料理をし、食べ、話し、遊び、眠るなどして過ごしました。村人からは、イノシシ鍋や鹿肉カレーなどもいただき、また山の自然や暮らしが今と昔でどう変わってきたかの話を聞かせてもらいました。この間、スマホなど「便利な」道具はほとんど使わず、聞いたり、見たり、話しをしたりすることに集中しました。暮らしことのために時間を使うなかで、参加者たちは、豊かで濃い学びを体験することが出来ました。星空を二日続けで見ることができた。自然の偉大さや厳しさを感じることができた

仲良く2泊3日の雪国暮らしを楽しみました

  • 背丈より高い雪の壁に思い思いの穴をあけて「雪灯ろう」を作る。時間と寒さを忘れて夢中で遊ぶ。神社の屋根には雪がどっさり。

　子ども雪国暮らし体験プログラムが、2019年1月12日から14日までの2泊3日で、新潟県南魚沼市清水集落で行われました。首都圏と沖縄から参加した小学校3-4年生6人、それを応援する大学生や社会人4人が、2mを越す雪の中で活動しました。

　例年ならば雪雲に覆われ続ける1月ですが、この週末だけは珍しく穏やかな天候が続き、青空が広がりまぶしい太陽の光が満ちあふれる絶好のコンディション。集落のご好意で集会所を拠点に使わせていただき、子どもたちは周囲の雪の斜面を使って、ソリ遊びからかまくらづくりなどに夢中になりました。

　沖縄からの子どもは無論、首都圏からの子どもたちもほとんどがこんな雪は初めて。到着するやいないや、大きな荷物を持ったまま雪に触って大喜び。持参したお弁当での昼食もそこそこに、雪の中に飛び出していきました。

雪の斜面に穴を掘ったり、ソリのコースを作ったり、自由に雪遊び。

　前の週にたっぷりと降り積もった雪はふかふかで、子どもたちは時にはひざまで雪に埋もれながら、お気に入りの場所まで前進。プラスチックのシャベルを使ってかまくらを掘ろうとしたり、ソリを使って斜面を滑り降りたり、大きな雪だるまを作ろうとしたり。子どもたちは自由に仲間を見つけ、隣が気になったらそちらのプロジェクトに移動して、雪をたっぷりと楽しみました。

用意された野菜は、多くが地元産。無農薬の魚沼コシヒカリも登場しました。

　滞在中は、すべて自分たちで自炊。1日目はクリームシチュー、2日目は豚汁の夕食という本格的な調理にも挑戦しました。ハクサイやニンジン、鳥や豚の肉を包丁で切り、鍋に投入する順番を相談し、調味料の分量もみんなで話し合って、味見を繰り返して、見事な夕食が出来ました。

　かんじきをはいての森の中のハイキングでは、動物の足跡があちこちについているのも見つけました。太い両足の跡が特徴的なウサギ、まっすぐにあるいているテンやリス。その雪の中を、どんどんと歩いて、雪山の途中まで進みました。向かいの斜面にいた小さな黒い点は、双眼鏡などで見ると大きな動物。「クマだ！」と大騒ぎになりました。茶色い動物は、ニホンカモシカ。短い角が付いた頭を動かしながら、雪の中から出ている木の葉っぱを一生懸命食べている姿を見ることができました。

　プログラムが始まる時に、子どもたちが相談して決めた約束は、「けんかをしない」「仲良く遊ぶ」など7項目。「地元の人にあいさつをする」という約束もありました。このためか、50m以上先の屋根の上で除雪している人に向かって、「こん、にち、わー。がんばってーくださーい」という大きなあいさつをすることも。通りかかったおばあさん2人にも雪合戦を中断して、「こんにちわー」。「雪、面白いかねー」と話しかけられて、「はーい」と元気に返事をしていました。

　雪を徹底的に楽しんだ3日間はあっという間に終わり。帰るときには、「次はもっと山の高いところまで登りたい」「もっといろんな動物を見たい」などというコメントを残してくれました。

Snow camp in the ““Snow country”

From March 26th to the 29th, 2016, ECOPLUS hosted the ““Yuki Zanmai,” or “Snow Indulgence” Camp” in Minami-Uonuma. Seven participants, all from elementary and middle schools in the Metropolitan area and Niigata enjoyed four days and three nights of living on the snow, where they all constructed their campsite entirely on their own.

This winter, we experienced an uncharacteristically small amount of snow. Despite being 600 meters above sea level, the village of Shimizu looked almost as though it was experiencing early spring.

Ordinarily, there would have been between 2 – 3 meters of snowfall by this point during an average year; instead, the area received an approximate 50 centimeters of snow this year. Due to this, we were worried that the “Snow Indulgence Camp” might not succeed, but we were blessed with good weather, and the children faced the challenge of living in the snow with a serious, sincere look in their eyes.

Children challenged to live on the snow by themselves. Making fire woods on the snow was one of the first duties.

A total of seven children was assembled of from fourth-year elementary school students to first-year middle school students. Some of the children had participated in ECOPLUS programs once or twice before, but this was their first time as a group in this area, as well as the first time holding an overnight camp on the snow. Everybody had a bit of a nervous look to him or her.

The children decided on their goals for the camp—some said, “It is important to take care of the environment,” while others said, “We hope to make friends here.” Once this was done, the Snow Indulgence Camp could begin.

Throughout the next four days, the children’s everyday necessities and personal lives were self-led. They trampled the snow underfoot in order to harden it, creating a space to raise their tents; they split wood for their fires; they melted snow for drinking water; and they made tables, chairs, cupboards for food, and even makeshift toilets entirely from snow. They even used snow to wipe their bottoms afterward!

They also used cedar leaves like sponges while washing their pots and pans. On the first day of the camp program, the children were confused about this new way of living, but they became as resilient as adults in only four days’ time.

穏やかな天候の中で、雪に包まれた体験をすることが出来ました。
Under the gorgeous blue sky, children enjoyed the nature and life in Tochikubo.

From the 9th of January to the 11th, ECOPLUS held our program, “Experiencing Natural Mountain Life: Winter Edition”, in Tochikubo village in Niigata prefecture.

The program was aimed at elementary school children, and we had 17 participants. Thirteen of them were city kids from metropolitan area, and the other four were students from Niigata prefecture.

The weather was thankfully very calm throughout, and everybody enjoyed getting to play in the snow under the blue sky.

We started the first day with many nervous faces when we conducted the orientation. The orientation began with self-introductions and some games. Afterwards we covered important things to be careful about and to watch out for. Lastly we broke them up into two groups regarding daily responsibilities, and gave some time for the two groups to discuss things together.

From the afternoon onwards, they were waiting in anticipation to be able to play in the snow. The snow was approximately 40cm deep, and when they finally could, they eagerly changed into their snow gear.

This was actually significantly less snow than on average. Regardless, for the kids the world still seemed to be completely covered in snow. They made snow huts (these snow huts, kamakura are traditionally made by kids in mid-January), had snow ball fights, and sled. The local kids even joined them in on the fun. The sound of laughing children echoed in the village.

On the second day we focused on observing nature. A local knowledgeable about the nature here accompanied us as a special guest. On the snow covered path he led us to the outskirts of the village. There we were able to get a phenomenal view of the mountains and forest. We even were able to see a very rare bird, a Tinnitus Mountain Hawk, perched on one of the mountain trees.

The kids were fascinated by the bird. After getting a telescope to confirm that it actually was a Tinnitus Mountain Hawk, we examined it for a while. For around half an hour it stayed in the same spot. When it finally flew away we could see the striped pattern of its back feathers. The kids tried to follow the bird until it disappeared from sight.

For the three days of the program, we borrowed the villageÆs assembly hall, and camped in there. The kids were responsible for cooking their own meals. For the most part, everything from cutting the ingredients, to cooking them, was done completely by them with some supervision.

On the last day, our closing event was a discussion and retrospective. While a completely new experience for many of the children, they spoke very fondly of the past three days. One kid enthusiastically said, ôSince I am an only child, it was especially fun to spend time here with lots of friendsö. Most of the other responses were quite similar.

From March 26th to the 29th, we will be holding a similar event, but this time aimed at older students. ôExperiencing Natural Mountain Life: Lingering Snow Seasonö will be open for 5th graders to high school students. We will tent over the snow for three nights and four days. We are eagerly awaiting this upcoming program.

779ヤップ島2013の事前キャンプを実施

2013年7月13-14日、ヤップ島プロジェクト参加者11人とオブザーバー、スタッフなどが神奈川県秦野市の丹沢山系で事前キャンプを実施しました。

の若者たちが集まり、7月13-14日の週末に、神奈川県秦野市の山で、事前キャンプを実施しました。

いつもお借りしている場所近くが、今年は大規模な間伐作業に入ったため、別の場所をお借りしての事前キャンプとなりました。このコナラの森。お茶栽培のための肥料に使うたい肥を作るための落ち葉集めの森。美しいコナラの林の中での週末でした。

ヤップ島プログラムと、カナダロッキーチャレンジの2グループ合同の事前キャンプを実施しました。
2012年6月2-3日（土日）に、神奈川県秦野市の丹沢山中にて1泊2日のキャンプを行ないました。8月に実施するヤップ島プログラムと、カナダロッキーチャレンジそれぞれのプログラムの事前キャンプです。

ヤップ島は7名、カナダは9名で合計16名、高校1年生〜大学院生が参加しました。遠く熊本や大阪から夜行バスに乗って来た人もいました。
2日間とも天気に恵まれ、爽やかに晴れ渡った空の元で、自然の中での生活作りや沢登り、参加者同士のディスカッションを行なうことができました。

山岳尻滑りに雪合戦、たっぷり遊んだ「子ども雪ざんまいキャンプ」

南魚沼市清水集落にて3泊4日のキャンプを実施しました。17人の子どもたちが雪の中で遊び、暮らし、新しいことにチャレンジしました。
新潟県南魚沼市清水集落にて、2012年3月27日から30日までの3泊4日で「雪ざんまいキャンプ」を行ないました。今回は地元南魚沼や新潟県の刈羽村、そして東京、神奈川、埼玉、大阪から17人の参加者が集まりました。小学4年生から高校2年生までと幅広い年齢層となりました。

期間全体に渡ってとても天候に恵まれ、そして清水地区活性化委員会の方々を中心に多くの人たちの協力があり、子どもたちは存分に雪の世界での暮らしと遊びを体験することができました。

山里子ども夏休みキャンプ2011

8月4日から6日まで、関東や新潟県各地からの小学校1年生から中学校1年生まで19人が、新潟県南魚沼市石打のスキー場ホテルを拠点に自然と親しみ、他の人たちと協力しながら暮らす活動をしました。

2011年8月4日から6日まで、新潟県南魚沼市石打で夏の子どもキャンプを実施しました。
今年は大雨の影響で、予定していた清水集落でのプログラムを急きょ変更しての開催となりました。それでも地元南魚沼市を始め、千葉県や神奈川県など関東圏や新潟市などから、女子9人、男子10人が集まってくれました。
宿泊は、丸山スキー場内のホテル「エルム」のレストラン部分をお借りし、二日目は越後湯沢の大源太キャンプ場で活動しました。
子どもたちは、生きもの探し、星空観察、川遊び、薪で火を起こしてパン作りなどの活動だけでなく、生活部分や、一日を振り返って活動ノートに記入するなど、3日間みっちりと元気いっぱいに過ごしました。プログラム中は、グループ単位で食事の準備や後片付けを分担し、最終日には大掃除も行いました。
