Weekend Farming Workshop,
“ABC” in a Rice Paddy, 2025

　エコプラスは今年も、田んぼのイロハを実施します。いつもより雪どけが大幅に早く、桜もあっというまに満開。不思議な季節の到来です。以下の日程で田植え、草取り、稲刈りと展開していきます。

　田植え（5月24-25日）
　草取り（6月21-22日）
　稲刈り（9月20-21日）
　　（いずれも仮予定、気候の変動に応じ、２カ月前に確定します）

ECOPLUS will organize the workshop, “ABC” in a Rice Paddy, in 2025. Although the climate is very curious, such as the snow melted one month earlier than normal years, we will conduct the programs as follows.

　Rice planting; May 24-25
　Weeding in the paddy; June 21-22

　舞台となるのは、魚沼盆地の平野部、樺野沢集落に位置します。代表理事髙野と事務局長大前夫婦が、2007年からお隣の長老に昔ながらの米作りを教わってきた、無農薬田んぼです。タニシやアキアカネ、アカハライモリ、ドジョウなどが無数に生息し、準絶滅危惧種のモートンイトトンボも確認されています。

The rice paddies, we will conduct the program, are which TAKANO Takako and OHMAE Junichi have been learning the traditional rice growing by elders living nearby since 2007. Since no chemical materials has been used for nearly 20 years, many creatures such as pond snails, dragonflies, newts, loaches and others including listed species.

長年使われてこなかった田んぼ。復活2年目の収穫は上々でした。

Contents and bringing
Planting seedlings by hands. Will be cancelled only in stormy condition. Bring your own lunch for Saturday, and water during activities. Clothings may get muddy. Insect repellent, a hat/cap. We recommend to come into the paddy with bare feet to feel the soil directly. Beach sandals are useful to wash your feet in a stream. Weekend Farming Workshop,
“ABC” in a Rice Paddy, 2024, Harvesting

　田んぼのイロハ稲刈り編を、9月21-22日の週末に実施します。無農薬田んぼのイネは、長雨や猛暑という不安定な夏を耐え、立派な穂を出し始めています。あと1カ月ほど、毎日の平均気温の積算が950度から1,000度になると稲刈り適期と言われます。どんなおコメが、出来るでしょうか。

ECOPLUS will conduct the weekend faming workshop, “ABC in a rive paddy,” on 21-22 September in Minamiuonuma, Niigata. We are again having unstable climate until now including too hot and too long rainy condition. Now new ears of rice are coming out and the flowers of rice are fully blossoms. When accumulated daily mean temperature will reached to 950 -1000 in Celsius, it is the best time to harvest.

稲刈り開始 Starting harvesting by hands

　「田んぼのイロハ」は、「農」の基本に立ち返って、そこからうまれる食、そして私たちの暮らしを考え直すプログラムです。カマを使って手で稲を刈り取り、束ね、干します。半世紀前までは日本中で当たり前だった作業と光景。いまでは「機械化」されてすっかり姿を消しました。

The workshop aims to re-think about so-called modern and convenient life style through hands-on experience in totally organic rice paddies and with the traditional way to grow rice. Using sickles, we will cut the stalks of the rice by hands and will tie sheaves to hang for sun-dry. Those activities are almost gone in industrialized faming now.

　カマを当てた時のイネの茎の強さ、担いだときの稲束の重さ、そしてこすれ合う米粒が起こす鈴のような乾いた音、五感で収穫を感じましょう。

You can enjoy the strength of the stalks as you cut the stalks with a sickle, the weight of the sheaves on your shoulder and listen to the sound made by the grains touching each other.

　田んぼのイロハ草取り編を、6月22-23日の週末に実施します。無農薬でのコメ作りには、手作業での草取りが欠かせません。除草剤が登場したのはわずか50年ほど前。それまでは、何百年にもわたって、田んぼでの草取りが行われてきました。

　基本に立ち返って、農と食、そして私たちの暮らしを考え直す田んぼのイロハ。田んぼの中で雑草に向き合うとき、何が見えてくるでしょうか。ちょうどホタルが舞う時期。無農薬田んぼならではの、無数のアキアカネの羽化にも出会えるはずです。

羽化したばかりのアキアカネ。ガラス細工のように透明。日に当たって数時間すると茶色くなって飛び立っていく。

休日農業講座「田んぼのイロハ」田植え編

Enjoyed the nature and lifestyle of a rural village in the rice farming workshop, “ABC in a rice paddy”

　2024年5月25、26日の週末、エコプラスの休日農業講座「田んぼのイロハ」田植え編が、新潟県南魚沼市で行われました。首都圏や山形県、長野県から、小学生を含む家族連れ、大学生、若手社会人、シルバー層までの19人が参加。地元の農家さんも応援に入ってもらい、青空の元で、新緑がまぶしい魚沼の自然を見つめ、無農薬田んぼの中での農作業を楽しみました。

On the weekend of May 25 and 26, 2024, an Ecoplus Weekend Farming Workshop, “ABC in a Rice Paddy,” was held in Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. Nineteen people from the Tokyo metropolitan area, Yamagata and Nagano prefectures participated, ranging from families with elementary school children to university students, young professionals, and senior citizens. Local farmers also supported the event. Under a blue sky, the participants enjoyed farming in chemical-free rice paddies while admiring the dazzling fresh green of Uonuma’s nature.

　初日は、魚沼盆地を見下す通称「観音様」と呼ばれる標高約700mの峠に上り、魚沼盆地の全体像を把握しました。遠く、群馬福島県境の山々もくっきり見える絶景。見ている回りには、ギフチョウが何匹も舞っていました。峠からの帰りには、上杉謙信が関東出兵の際に通った「古道」を散策。兵馬で土地がくぼんだ地形を実際に歩いて、500年近く前の光景を思い浮かべました。

On the first day, we climbed to the 700-meter-high mountain pass commonly called “Kannon-sama” overlooking the Uonuma Basin to get an overall view of the Uonuma Basin. The mountains on the border of Gunma and Fukushima prefectures were clearly visible in the distance. A number of rare species of butterflies called “Gifucyo” danced around us. On the way back from the pass, we walked along the “old road” that UESUGI Kenshin took when he marched in the Kanto region. We actually walked through the terrain where the land had been hollowed out by the soldiers and horses, and we were reminded of the scene nearly 500 years ago.

　2日目は、田んぼでの活動。田んぼの一角に畳1枚分ほどの広さの苗代が4つ。そこに背丈10センチほどの苗がびっしりと育っています。現代では、苗は温室状態で保温しながら育てるのが普通になっていて、露地の「水苗代」はほとんど姿を消しています。

The second day, we worked in the rice paddies. In one corner of the rice field were four seedbeds the size of one tatami mat. There, seedlings about 10 centimeters tall were growing in tight rows. Nowadays, seedlings are usually grown in greenhouses with warm conditions, and open-air “water seedbeds” have almost disappeared.

　この水苗代から苗を取る、50年ほど前までは当たり前だった「苗取り」作業に挑戦しました。腰をかがめ両手をがっと開いて、土ごと苗をすくうように取り出します。イネそっくりのイヌビエが同じように育っていて、そのイヌビエを判別して取り除きます。

We took on the challenge of removing seedlings from this water nursery, a task that was commonplace until about 50 years ago. Bending over at the waist with both hands outstretched, we scooped out the seedlings as if we were scooping up the soil. The wild millet seedlings were growing in the seedbeds, so we had to identify and remove the millet seedlings. Both were so similar. The participants were challenged to identify the differences.

　田植えをする田んぼには、六角形の木枠を転がして跡を付け、そこに苗を数本づつ植えていきます。苗を取り、それを運び、植える作業を、気がつくと全員で分担しながら流れるように展開していました。

In the rice field where the rice was to be planted, a hexagonal wooden frame is rolled out to make a mark, and the seedlings are planted on the marks. The work of taking the seedlings, carrying them, and planting them unfolded fluidly as we all found ourselves sharing the work.

　3時間ほどで、150㎡ほどの田植えは終了。あぜでおにぎりランチを楽しみました。参加したみなさんは「泥の中に手足を入れた感覚が、なぜだか幸福だなと思い、不思議でした」「どうやっておコメを作るのかが分かった」などという言葉を残してくれました。

In about three hours, we finished the planting of about 150 square meters of rice. The participants then enjoyed a lunch of onigiri (rice balls) at the edge of the rice paddy. Participants left comments such as, “The feeling of putting my hands and feet in the mud made me wonder why I felt so happy,” and “I now understand how rice is grown.

　次回は、6月22、23日の週末に、草取り編を実施します。

The next workshop will be a weeding session on the weekend of June 22 and 23.

　今回の舞台となる田んぼは、エコプラスが16年間「田んぼのイロハ」を実施してきた栃窪集落から標高で300mほど下った魚沼盆地の平野部、樺野沢集落に位置します。代表理事髙野と事務局長大前夫婦が、2007年からお隣の長老に昔ながらの米作りを教わってきた、無農薬田んぼです。タニシやアキアカネ、アカハライモリ、ドジョウなどが無数に生息し、準絶滅危惧種のモートンイトトンボも確認されています。

　さらに、それまで10数年耕作されず、昨年耕しなおす「復田」作業をして、無農薬栽培を始めた田んぼを、今年も使います。

栃窪集落の若手農家のおコメ、おいしいです

Order special rice, grown with minimum chemicals in Tochikubo Village

　2007年からお世話になってきた南魚沼市栃窪地区での無農薬での稲作プログラムが継続出来なくなりました。集落営農を担ってきた農業法人が高齢化で事業を終えられたためです。

The organic rice farming program in Tochikubo Village, which we have been organizing since 2007, can no longer continue. This is because the community farming organization has ceased operations due to the aging of the farmers.

　一方で、栃窪地区では、30代の日熊恵一さんが実家の水田を中心に本格的な専業農家としての活動を始められました。
　トラクターでの耕うんから、毎日の水管理、あぜの草刈り、刈り取った米の調整作業などを、先輩農家の指導のもとで見事にこなされ、立派なおコメを作られました。

Meanwhile, in Tochikubo, HIGUMA Keiichi, a farmer in his thirties, has started to work as a full-time farmer. With the support of his senior farmers, he has successfully managed the daily tasks of plowing with a tractor, daily water management, mowing of the edges, and processing the harvested rice, and has produced excellent rice.

　昨年は、7月下旬から8月いっぱいまでほとんど雨が降らない厳しい気候でした。新潟県のコシヒカリで1等米はわずかに5％弱という状況でしたが、恵一さんのおコメはすべて1等米。
　エコプラスはこのおコメの告知や販売のお手伝いをしています。

Last year, we had a harsh climate with no rain from late July to the end of August. Only less than 5% of the Koshihikari rice in Niigata was first class, but Higuma’s rice was all first class.

ECOPLUS is helping to promote and sell this rice.

　この田んぼでは、田植えから収穫期まで、最低限の除草剤だけを使っています。減農薬のおコメです。玄米1キロ700円、白米同800円、送料別途。

The rice is “reduced pesticide rice,” which means that herbicides and other pesticides are not used. The price is 700 yen per kilo for brown rice, 800 yen per kilo for white rice, and shipping costs are not included.

　エコプラスは、2023年9月23-24日の週末、新潟県南魚沼市塩沢地域で、休日農業講座「田んぼのイロハ」稲刈り編を行いました。例年にない暑さが続く中、コシヒカリの名産地である塩沢地域の自然と農の姿を見つめ、無農薬田んぼでの稲刈り作業を楽しむことが出来ました。

ECOPLUS conducted the weekend farming workshop, “ABC in a rice paddy,” harvesting work, on 23-24 September 2023. Under the very unusual hot weather conditions, we learned about nature and agriculture in Shiozawa area, which is the heartland of famous Koshihikari rice, and enjoyed harvesting work by hand in non-chemical rice paddies.

　初日の23日土曜日は、あいにくの小雨模様。標高700mの通称「観音様」と呼ばれる峠まで上って、魚沼盆地全体を眺めました。雲の切れ目からは、稲刈り前の黄色い田んぼ、刈られた直後の茶色い田んぼ、草が生えてきて緑になってきた田んぼと、パッチワークのようになった平野部を見ることが出来ました。隆起海底のなだらかな丘からしみ出るミネラル豊かな雪どけ水が、この地のコシヒカリを日本最高の味にしているなどという説明を受けました。

On Saturday, the 23rd, the weather was a bit wet. We went to the top of the hill called “Kwanon-sama” at an altitude of 700 meters to observe the Uonuma Basin. Rice fields with yellow (not yet harvested), brown (just harvested) and green (more than weeks after harvest with weeds) made a beautiful patchwork. The soil of the hill is raised seabed that provides minerals to the snow melted water in the spring. These minerals give the best flavor to the rice grown here.

　24日は快晴。すっきりとした青空の元で、稲刈り作業を始めました。鎌を使った稲刈りの経験者は、参加した22人の中の数人。注意しながら、稲の株の根本を、ぎざぎざがついた専用の鎌でざくっと切って、稲束を刈り取っていきました。数束づつを根本近くでＸ字に交差させ、それをわらで縛っていきます。これが難しい。Ｘ字にするのは、左右に振り分けてはざにかけやすくするための事前の工夫。「刈るだけじゃなくて、束ねる、かける、と一連の作業があることがわかった」と感心する声も聞こえました。

On Sunday the 24th we started harvesting under a beautiful blue sky. Among the 22 participants, only some had the experience of harvesting with sickles. They cut the bottom part of the rice stalks with sickles, then laid on the edge, crossed the bottom part in X-shape, then bundled two into one with dried straws. This was the most difficult part. Making the X shape makes it easier to hang the sheaf on the pole. One commented, “I understood that not only cutting, but also bundling and hanging must be done in one line.

　9時から始めて午後1時には、2枚の田んぼ、計30アール余りの稲刈りを完了しました。新米おにぎりをあぜで食べる「青空ランチ」をしながら、刈り取った稲が掛かったハザと遠くまで広がる田んぼを前に、おコメの価値を考えながらの楽しい会話が続きました。

By 1 pm, which took 4 hours from the beginning, the harvesting works of two rice paddies were completed. We set lunch place on the edge. Taking rice balls of newly harvested rice by the inn, all of us enjoyed talking about the value of rice and the beautiful environment in this area.

Rice Harvesting Workshop on Sept. 23-24

　エコプラスは2023年9月23-24日の週末、新潟県南魚沼市樺野沢地区で、休日農業講座「田んぼのイロハ」稲刈り編を行います。これまで生育状況を見守ってきましたが、7月中旬以降の高温乾燥の悪条件の中で、なんとか穂が出て、9月後半での稲刈りが見通せるようになりました。参加フォームは、画面下にあります。

ECOPLUS will conduct rice harvesting workshop on 23-24 September 2023 in Kabanosa Village, Minamiuonuma, Niigata.We have been monitoring the growing process since the planting time. With this long hot and dry summer, ears are successfully coming out now. In this situation, in those weekend, the rice will be ready to be harvested.

Contents and bringing
Weeding works by hands. Will be cancelled only in stormy condition. Bring your own lunch for Saturday, and water during activities. Clothings may get muddy. Insect repellent, a hat/cap. More information will be provided for those whose participation is confirmed.

　鳥の声に包まれる田んぼでの週末

Weeding and Planting Workshop surrounded by beautiful tweets

　エコプラスは2023年6月10-11日の週末、新潟県南魚沼市樺野沢地区で、休日農業講座「田んぼのイロハ」草取り編を行いました。2週間前に苗を植えた田んぼでの草取りをし、余力があったので、別の田んぼでの田植えもしました。山からは幻の鳥といわれるアカショウビンの鳴き声が聞こえ、夜にはホタルが舞う、美しい環境を堪能しました。

ECOPLUS conducted rice weeding and planting workshop on 10-11 June 2023 in Kabanoswa Village, Minamiuonuma, Niigata. Participants were so active that in addition to the weeding works, they also planted seedlings in another organic rice paddy. From the forest, tweets of a ruddy kingfisher were identified and in the evening, we observed several fireflies. Gorgeous weekend in the pristine environment!

　11日の土曜日は薄曇り。当初からの参加者は、首都圏からの大学生や社会人4人。地元の山城「樺沢城」に上り、450年前の北条勢と上杉勢の争いの歴史に触れるなどして、地域の全体像を把握しました。

On Saturday, we started the workshop with four participants at the beginning. Walking around the village and hiking up to the old fort of “Kabasawa-Zyo” which has the more than 450-year-history to understand the background of the area.

Weeding in the rice paddy 田んぼの草取り

　草取りの本番では、田んぼに恐る恐る裸足で入りました。「気持ち良い！」と大きな声。陽射しで温められた田んぼは、ぬるめの足湯を思わせる温度。土も優しく足を包み込んでくれました。田植えの時の2倍ほど、高さ20センチ近くになった苗の回りには、1センチ前後の小さな緑色の葉っぱが、水底に発生しています。両手をがっと広げて、苗の回りをすくうように動かして雑草を土から外して浮かせ、手に引っかかった草を固めて外のあぜに投げ出しました。

In the weeding workshop, participants put their bear feet carefully into the rice paddy. Thanks to the sun shine, the water was warmed up as if it would be a warm bath tub water and mud was very smooth. Seedlings were grown to about 20 cm tall and those were surrounded by tiny green leaves of weeds underwater. With five fingers strongly open, we were rubbing the mud to remove the roots of weeds out of mud. Some of weeds were trapped in the hand and we through away those outside of the paddy.

珍しいモートンイトトンボ

　新たに5人が加わった2日目は、時折ぱらぱらと小雨が降る中、10数年間、耕作されていなかった隣の田んぼでの田植え。長年使われていなかった田んぼだけに、トラクターにも入ってもらいましたが、すき込まれた雑草類が分解される際のガスが大量に発生。1カ月近く、何度も耕し直しては水を入れ替えて、何とか田んぼとして使えそうな状況になってきました。

On day 2, with five more persons, we tried to plant seedlings in a rice paddy which had not been used for over 10 years. With the help of a tractor, the paddy was reshaped as a rice paddy, however the too much plants grown in the area were buried in the ground and those biodegrading process generated much of gas which is harmful for rice seedlings. After several tilling and drying processes, the condition looked like suitable for planting.

隣の田んぼの田植え開始

　伝統的な六角形の木枠を転がして型を付け、その線が交差する場所に苗を手で植えるのが、南魚沼の伝統的な手法。枠転がしは直進するのが難しく、ゆっくりと転がす作業を、交代して体験してもらいました。田植えの終盤では、アカハライモリが登場。関東平野では絶滅が危惧されるまでになり、環境省が準絶滅危惧種に指定しています。10数センチの長さで、お腹が真っ赤な姿に、参加のみなさんが見入っていました。

Making marks by a hexagon frames is the traditional way of rice planting in “Minami-Uonuma” area. It was not easy to roll the frame straight for participants. Some of young participants experienced the action. Others followed the frame to plant seedlings by their hands. At the end of the session, we identified three Japanese fire belly newt which is classified as the near threatened(NT) category in Red Data book of Japan.

　この週末を通して、山の林からはアカショウビンの鳴き声が響き渡り、沢の上流方向ではホタルが乱舞しと、多くの生きものが無農薬田んぼの周辺で確認されました。豊かな自然とそれに支えれてきた農が、数百年にわたる地域を育んできたことを実感した「田んぼのイロハ」でした。

Thought the weekend, we felt the richness of the nature surround the organic non-chemical rice paddies with tweets of ruddy kingfishes, dancing fireflies and others. Participants confirmed that the history of the village for over 500 years was fostered by the nature of the area and knowledge of ancestors who had been using the environment wisely.

Rice Planting Workshop in Gorgeous View in a Village of 500-year History

　エコプラスは2023年5月27-28日の週末、新潟県南魚沼市樺野沢地区で、休日農業講座「田んぼのイロハ」田植え編を行いました。これまで16年間、少し山を上った栃窪地区で実施してきましたが、今回からは場所を移しての開催となりました。次回の「草取り」編は、6月10-11日の予定です。参加フォームは、画面下にあります。

ECOPLUS conducted rice planting workshop on 27-28 May 2023 in Kabanoswa Village, Minamiuonuma, Niigata. In past 16 years, we organized the program in nearby village, Tochikubo. Due to the aging issue of the village, the venue was moved to Kabanosawa from this season.

　27日の土曜日はすっきりとした快晴。首都圏からの大学生や社会人、シルバー世代や地元の助っ人など7人が、田んぼの一角で育てられた苗代（なわしろ）からの苗取りから始めました。

On Saturday, seven participants including students, office worker and retired person with local supporters, started to take out seedlings from seed beds in the rice paddy.

　4月23日にもみをまいた苗代には、背丈10センチほどの苗がびっしりと育っています。気温が低い日が続いたために、背丈は低めですが、茎はしっかりしています。指を広げて根っこ部分に奥深く突き刺して、根本から浮かせるようにして苗を押し上げ、水で根を洗って、苗の束を作っていきます。苗の葉っぱには、金色に輝くモートンイトトンボ（環境省準絶滅危惧種）が何匹も隠れています。無農薬で栽培を続けてきた田んぼなので、地域の生きもの専門家がびっくりするような生きものがたくさんいます。

In the seedbed, seedlings were grown to around 10 cm high densely. Since late April when seeds were spread, temperature went down below 10 C some time. So the hight of the seedlings were bit low but stems were strong. In order to minimize damages of roots, not just pulling out, it needed to push fingers deeper in the mud, then to bring out seedling with mud. After washing mud with water, we made bunched of seedlings. Inside of young leaves, we identified several tiny golden dragonflies, a endangered species, “Mortonagrion selenion.”

　今回の舞台となる田んぼは、栃窪集落から標高で300mほど下った魚沼盆地の平野部に位置します。代表理事髙野と事務局長大前夫婦が、2007年からお隣の長老に昔ながらの米作りを教わってきた、無農薬田んぼです。タニシやアキアカネ、アカハライモリ、ドジョウなどが無数に生息し、準絶滅危惧種のモートンイトトンボも確認されています。

The rice paddy, we will conduct the program, was where TAKANO Takako and OHMAE Junichi has been learning the traditional rice growing by elders living nearby since 2007. Since no chemical materials has been used for nearly 20 years, many creatures such as pond snails, dragonflies, newts, loaches and others including listed species.

枠転がし　To put marks where seedlings should be sit, we used this hexagonal wooden frame.

　28日の日曜は、早朝バードウォッチング。地元の専門家深沢和基さんの案内で、裏山の杉林にアオサギがコロニーを作り、別の杉の木のてっぺんから、タカの一種サシバを獲物を鋭く探している様子などを観察できました。400年以上前に、攻め込んできた北条勢と地元の上杉勢の戦いの場となった山城「樺沢城」での散策などを通じて、地元の歴史にも触れました。

On Sunday, we had an early morning bird watching session with a local specialist. We spotted gray herons, grey-faced buzzards and others. The walk to the top of the old fort, “Kabasawa-Zyo,” which once was serious battle field of Uesugi-clan and Hozyo-clan more than 400 years ago, gave us the sense of accumulation of peoples live in the area.
