Today, we study all the day. After we checked out Youth Hostel, we went to a construction company by train. This is first time for them to take a train. The company is involved with Yap very much. We have very careful explanation about “development and environment” in this company. For Yap, development is very important word. “What do they want to change Yap from now on?” This is important question for them. In the afternoon, we moved by subway and visit the hotel, after we had lunch. “What can we do for environment in this business we know that obviously destroys environment. We must think too many things. And thank you for these companies to welcome kindly. After visiting these companies, we went to Hibiya Park, saw stone money which set in there, and came back to Youth Hostel. On arriving there, we had an explanation about homestay. After that, they were picked up by their host family.

130322前田講座01s　今日は一日勉強の日でした。午前中はユースホステルをチェックアウトした後、初めての電車に乗り、ヤップ島とも関係の深い建設会社に行ってきました。ここでは、開発と環境についてとても丁寧に説明してもらいました。

特に開発という単語は今のヤップにとって、とても大事な単語になっています。これからのヤップをどうしていきたいのか。彼らがこれからよく考えていかなければいけない課題です。午後は地下鉄で移動をして昼食をとったあと、あるホテルを見学させていただきました。環境によくないとわかっている事業の中で環境への負荷を軽減させるためには何ができるのか。いろいろ考えさせられました。

どちらの会社もお忙しい中とても暖かい歓迎をしていただきました。会社見学のあとは日比谷公園にある石貨を見て、今度は地下鉄に乗ってユースホステスまで帰ってきました。帰ってきてすぐホームステイについて説明があり、その後各ホームステイ先の家族に迎えられ少し照れて硬くなりながらもあいさつをし、ユースを去っていきました。

How do they feel about first trip by train? They looked little nervous for using tickets and riding on a train. And some Yapese was surprising at big noise made by train. Then, I wonder they have no idea to look stone money in Japan, they were surprised at stone money in Hibiya Park. Some Yapese thought why does this stone money fall sideways, another thought how valuable is this stone money. If you want to see the stone money, please look for!!

130322地下鉄の切符　初めての電車移動はみんなにとってどうだったのでしょうか。初めて切符を使って改札を通り、ほとんどの子が初めて乗る電車に緊張しながら乗っていました。電車から降りた後、電車が通りすぎるたびにする大きな音にとても驚いている子もいました。また、日本で見るとは思わなかったのか、日比谷公園にある石貨にもみんな驚いていたみたいです。驚きながらも、石貨の向きがちょっとおかしくて首をひねっている子や石貨の価値が気になっている子もいました。気になった方は日比谷公園で石貨を探してみてください！

昨日、今日と新しいことが目白押しで盛りだくさんな内容に疲れたかもしれませんが、ホームステイでは少しゆっくりできるでしょうか。明日からのホームステイでどんな体験が待っているのか楽しみですね。みんなで共有する時が楽しみです！

They may be tired because they had so many newly experiences in few days. But can they relax at their homestay? Please enjoy your homestay!! I’m looking forward to sharing their experiences!

Visiting big businesses, 大企業を訪問

The day 3 would be ‘Big business day.’ Students started to have a lecture at Maeda corporation, a global construction company which once build fishing harbors and large freezers in Yap.   The company provided them a overview of environmental issues in general and then moved to their cases in their development activities. 130322前田講座渡辺さんs

3日目は、企業訪問が続きます。午前中は前田建設を訪問。ヤップ島で漁港施設や冷凍庫を建設したことがある会社で、ヤップでの経験を今でも語る社員がいるそうです。ここで環境問題全体の講義を聞き、同時に具体的な開発の中での環境への配慮の方法について説明を受けました。

前田建設に行く途中、一行は中央線に乗りました。ほとんどの若者たちには初めての電車。緊張していました。

Today was one of the busiest day. And the weather was totally different from that of yesterday: it was cold and windy.
Most Yapese seemed to feel cold all day long. (some got out without giving it too much thought about the weather so they seemed even to get frozen. anyway, in a sense, it was a good experience for them to know the difference of climate before they go to Nigata)
We gathered at 7 in the morning!! (crazy….so early!!) We got on a bus and went to Tsukizi Fish Market.
At the market, Mr.Hirako showed us some restaurants which he recommended to have breakfast.
After we had breakfast, Mr.Niimi from Daito Gyorui company took us to see through the fish market. There were plenty of fish with different types, colors and shapes. Many of those fish seemed familiar to Yapish students.
And then Mr.Niimi gave us a lecture and showed us a video about how the fish market is working now and its history.
For me this was also the first time to see around Tsukizi fish market, so it was amazing and I learned about a lot of things.
Next we went to the “Chuohu Bohatei,” it is the dumping site of garbage from all over Tokyo 23 wards.
It was huge area. Even Japanese, we rarely see inside the dumping site, so there were a lot of things which I knew for the first time .

Then, we tested water visibility in two spots in order to compare with that in Yap.  At a river management center and we were welcomed by a lot of officers and through the lectures here we learned that water and waste are really connected issues.
In late evening we took “UDON,” or Japanese noodles and had reflection session at the youth hostel exchanging opinions over trash and water issues.
At the end, I really appreciate my friend, Xinle, for her hard work for the translation in such busy schedule.

今日は一番といっていいくらいに忙しい日でした。

また気候も昨日の暖かな陽気とは打って変わり、寒くて風も強く、ヤップの子たちは日本の洗礼をうけたようでした。
（多くは寒さを甘く見て、一日中凍えていました。しかし、新潟に行く前でよかった）
　朝、7時にロビーに集合してバスに乗り、築地に出発。
　築地では、平子さんの案内で市場内で朝ごはんをいただき、その後、大都魚類の新美さんの先導で場内の魚売り場を見学させていただきました。
　そして、その後、会議室で主に築地市場につい てのビデオとレクチャーを受けました。
私自身も築地の場内に入るのは初めてでしたので、新しく知ることばかりで興味深い見学でした。
　次に中央防波堤に向かいます。ここは東京都23区のごみの最終処分場です。
　その後、荒川の知水資料館にも行きここでもレクチャーを受けましたが、ごみと水は別々の問題ではなく密接した問題であることを再確認させられました。
　途中、荒川と青梅川ではヤップの子たちが透明度を調査。彼らは同じことをヤップの海でもやってきたので、比較して振り返りミーティングでその結果についても議論しました。（結果は報告書をお楽しみに）
　予定より1時間遅れの帰りとなりへとへと。（もちろん、日本人も。うー ん、日本人のほうが！？）
　夕飯ははなまるうどんで各々楽しそうに好きなものを注文して……
そ　ろそろ彼らも、ごはん前の「いただきます」、後の「ごちそうさま」は慣れたもの。お箸も大半がだいぶ慣れてきて楽しそうに夕食を食べていました。
　最後にホテルに戻って、振り返りです。昨日の簡単なものとは違い、たくさんの場所に行った今日は、振り返りもより踏み込んだ内容になります。
　それぞれに意見を言って考えを深めていき、およそ1時間。眠気と闘いながらのミーティングはヤップに行ったことのある人たちは経験済みだと思いますが、ヤップの子たちも頑張っていました。
　今日はテーマが水とごみということで、朝早くからたくさんの 場所にいき、レクチャーも3つほど受けたので、スケジュール的にはタイトでしたが、様々な問題が絡み合った、一筋縄ではいかない現実をみることができ、私たち日本人にとっても、もちろんヤップの子たちにとっても実り多き日でした。
　今日の寒さで風邪をひいたりする子がいないことを祈ります。
　最後に、通訳のために前準備を念入りにしてくれた友人のシンレ、ありがとう。とても感謝しています。
