無農薬田んぼでの稲刈りをしました

Harvesting Workshop in Organic Rice Paddy

　エコプラスは、2021年9月25、26の両日、新潟県南魚沼市栃窪集落で、休日農業講座「田んぼのイロハ」の稲刈り編を行いました。25日は晴天、26日は雨の中、それぞれ20人前後で無農薬田んぼに見事に育った稲を刈り取り、天日乾燥のためにハザにかけました。

On September 25 and 26 of 2021, ECOPLUS conducted harvesting workshop in an organic rice paddy in Tochikubo Village in Minamiuonuma, the heartland of the famous “Koshihikari-Rice,” in Niigata.

　新型コロナウイルスの対応のため、田んぼへの直行直帰の日帰り実施としました。参加したのは首都圏や新潟県内の高校生から退職者までの23人。全員が2回のワクチン接種済みでした。

Considering the situation of COVID-19, we organized the program as a day program asking participants come to and leave from the paddy directly. All 23 participants were fully vaccinated.

　25日は、透き通るような青空が広がりました。輝くような黄色に染まった田んぼは、刈るのが惜しいくらいの鮮やかさです。参加者は、手足を稲から守るために長袖・長ズボン姿。朝なのに汗が吹き出る暑さです。まずは、地元の笛木晶さんから、鎌の使い方や刈り取った稲をわらで束ねる方法を教わりました。地元で「まるける」と言う作業。これがなかなか難しい。

On Saturday, we had gorgeous view of golden rice paddy under the blue sky. In order to protect skin, we needed to wear long sleeves. The sunshine was so strong. All of us sweated from the beginning. Mr.FUEKI Akira, a local farmer, taught us the important and difficult skill, to bundle the sheaf, called “Meruke,” in this area.

　稲刈りが初めての人が半分以上とあって、刈り取ったつもりが刈り残した茎が残ったり、「まるけ」がうまく行かなかったり。さらに、田んぼの一部がぬかるんで、一度ハマったら前進も後退もできずと、悪戦苦闘。

More than half of participants were totally novice at using a sickle. At the beginning they were struggling to cut the stems clearly and to make “Maruke” in muddy rice paddy.

　しばらくするとみなさん作業に慣れ、自分の世界に没入して作業する人、初対面同士で世間話をしながらマイペースで作業する人と様々に稲と向かい合っていました。稲株の間からは緑鮮やかなカエルたち、すぐ目の前には真っ赤なアキアカネが登場します。さらには絶滅危惧種のシナイモツゴも田んぼに水を引き込む升の中から見つかりました。

However in one hour or so, people acquired the ways. Some were just keep cutting and bundling works and some were doing the work taking neighboring persons joyfully. Fresh green colored frogs were jumping out from the ground. Red dragonflies were coming close to us. From a tiny structure to introduce water to the paddy, small fishes were caught and a local biologist explained those as one of endangered species in Japan, called “Shiny-Motsugo.”

　26日は雨になる予報だったので、予定を1時間早めて8時30分より作業開始。最初は、曇り空で吹く風も涼しく、手慣れたこともあり作業はどんどん進みます。昼近くに、雨が降り始めました。残りは3割程度。田んぼはどんどんぬかるみ、寒さを感じるようになってきました。最後は参加者全員で一気に刈り取りを進め、何と午後1時過ぎには、全てを刈り取り、はざにかけるまでの作業を終えました。

On Sunday, weather condition totally changed. We started the work one hour earlier. It was cool and comfortable at the beginning. The work went smoother than the day before. Close to the noon, the rain started. The temperature went down, too. At the end, all of us worked hard to finish. Surprisingly we finished all works from cutting, budding and hanging by shortly after 1 pm.

　参加者の間からは「お米1粒1粒がタネであることを考えると、なんだか本当にありがたい。秋の田んぼが黄金に見えるのは幻ではない。お米たちが命をつなぐクライマックスを迎え、キラキラ輝いていたからだと思う」などという、コメントをいただきました。

“I somehow felt appreciation when I thought each of those grains was a ‘seed’ when I faced to those rice. The shining golden rice field might not be illusion. Rice was shining because they were celebrating the final phase to pass the life to the next generation;” a young participant commented.

　このお米は、10日から2週間、天日乾燥させたあとで、お米となっていきます。この無農薬天日乾燥米のおすそ分け、限られた量ですが受け付けています。

The organic rice will be dried for 10 days to 2 weeks. Then husks will be removed and will be ready to eat. Only limited amount are available for interested persons.

　エコプラスが新潟県南魚沼市栃窪地区で展開する、休日農業講座「田んぼのイロハ」。新型コロナの影響で、今年も日帰りでの限定実施となりましたが、無農薬田んぼで、お米は見事に育ちました。

We are happy to announce that the sun-dried organic rice grown in our rice paddy in Tochikubo village, Minamiuonuma, will be harvested shortly with quite high quality shortly. The rice will be dried under the sun a while then in mid-October it will be ready to taste.

　この田んぼで出来たお米の一部を、おすそ分けします。除草剤や病害虫用の農薬など、人工的な化学物質を一切使っていません。

From the planting of seedlings to weeding and harvesting, ECOPLUS has been organizing workshops although in this tough time caused by COVID-19. Very limited amount of this precious rice will be available for sale.

　稲刈りも手刈り。「はざ」にかけて10日前後、天日乾燥させます。無農薬天日乾燥というほぼ流通しない、特別なお米です。コシヒカリのふるさと南魚沼の塩沢地区。南東向きの棚田で育った特別なお米。数に限りがあるので、お一人30キロまでの特別配布です。

　新型コロナの影響下だからこそ、何を食べるのか、その食べ物はどこで、だれが、どのように作ったものか。改めて考えてみませんか。

No chemical materials, like pesticides and weed killers, were used. Fertilizer is 100% organic. Traditional sun drying process on the rack was taken. Because of so many hand works, such totally organic rice is almost vanished even in this Minamiuonuma, the heart land of famous “Koshihikari Rice.”

2020年5月中旬の田んぼの様子です。

　新型コロナウィルスの影響で、スキーや学生の夏合宿など観光に依存する南魚沼市の経済は打撃を受けています。エコプラスがお世話になっている南魚沼市栃窪集落も、雇用削減による収入減で大ピンチです。

　イロハ田んぼの無農薬米のほか、地元の集落営農組織「とちくぼパノラマ農産」の減農薬米も販売します。流通を通さずに消費者に直接販売することで、農家には通常よりも高い代金が入ります。

　無農薬米、減農薬米、いずれも数量に限りがあります。お早めにお申し込み下さい。

　刈った稲は10月最初の2週間ほど、ハザにかけて天日乾燥させ、その上でもみすりと調整をします。発送は10月下旬から11月にかけてになると思います。

　2021年9月25、26日に南魚沼市栃窪集落で、無農薬田んぼでの稲刈りをします。新型コロナが収まっていないので、今回も、ワクチン接種ずみで事前の行動制限をされた方、PCR検査をすませた方を対象に、日帰り形式で行います。田んぼに直接来ていただいて、作業をします。お弁当、飲み物、行動食など持参でお越し下さい。

On Sept 25 and 26, ECOPLUS will conduct “Harvesting Workshop” in Tochikubo village, Minamiuonuma as one-day program, only with those who finished vaccines and self regulation or PCR negative persons. Come to the rice paddy with your lunch, drinks and snacks.

  • 趣旨
    　巻機山を望む絶景の棚田で、自然をたっぷり感じながら、無農薬田んぼの稲刈りをします。春の田植え、夏の草取りを経て、ようやく実った稲を、手で刈り取り、はざにかけて天日乾燥させます。屋外で体を動かし、同時に、コロナの影響下で改めて注目される「食」や「農」を、体験を通じて見直す機会になればと思っています。
  • Summary
    Experience traditional harvesting works by hand in organic rice paddy overseeing gorgeous mountainous view. You will experience cutting stems by a sickle, binding those by straws, then hanging sheaves on drying structure called “haza.” Have your body and mind refreshed in the open air field. You may also deepen the insight of food and farming through the workshop.

    　25、26日、いずれも午前9時半に田んぼに集合（あとから参加も可。別途連絡を）。いずれも午後3時ごろには終える予定です。
  • Schedule
    Gathering; 09:30 am on site, if you come later just inform us. Closed around 03:00 pm.
  • 内容
    　無農薬田んぼでの、手作業での稲刈り。小雨決行。
  • 服装と持ち物
    　お昼ご飯。あぜで食べます。飲み物や休憩時のお菓子なども。長袖長ズボン（泥で汚れますし、虫も寄ってきます）、作業用手袋、日除け、マイカップ、水筒、長靴。場合によっては雨具が必要。ブヨがいますので、防虫スプレーや虫よけネットなどご用意下さい。

    Your lunch (no shops in the village), drinks and snacks. Long sleeve working clothes. working globes, hat/cap, your own cup, water bottle, rubber boots, insect repellent.
  • 定員 Limit of participants.
    　20人をめどとします。We will only have up to 20 participants a day.

Big reunion of Yap & Kaohagan Program Cerebrating 30th year

30年目を記念する大同窓会を開催

　ミクロネシア連邦のヤップ島を中心に開催してきた「地球体験チャレンジ」が、今年で30年目となるのを記念して、これまでのプログラム参加による大同窓会が、2021年9月4日午前10時から正午まで、オンライン形式で開催されました。小学生から20代半ばまでで参加した若者たちは、40歳代半ばを筆頭とする立派な大人となり、沖縄から北海道、そして米国、欧州、アジア、豪州など各地で活躍中。同じ時期に参加した仲間たちとの分科会などで、久しぶりの会話が弾みました。

Celebrating 30th year since ECOPLUS started the program in Yap, Micronesia and Kaohagan in the Philippines, a big reunion was held online on Sept. 4, 2021. Ex-participants who were elementary students to early 20s were now well grown adults living in all over Japan and the world from Hokkaido to Okinawa, US, Europe, Australia and other Asian countries. All of those enjoyed talking with old friends doing the session.

I addition to the ex-participants and supporting staff, we had Tina, Linda, both participated invitation tour to Japan in 1997, and En, Sean, both participated Japan tour in 2013, 17 and 19, from Yap.

　集まったのは、ヤップ島のほか、フィリピンのカオハガン島でのプログラムに参加したかつての子どもたちなど計95人が参加。ヤップ側からはティナさんとリンダ（いずれも1997年、高校生の時に日本へ招へい）、エンさん、ショーンさん（いずれも2013年、17年、19年、日本に招へい）が参加してくれました。

　司会進行は、田中にがつさん（94年参加）、川口大輔さん（99年参加）。最初に、これまでの計36本のプログラムをふり返るスライドを見た後、エコプラスの髙野孝子代表理事からこれまで30年をふり返ってのカオハガンとヤップの変化を報告。事務局の大前からも、エコプラスの現地での環境保全活動などの状況の説明を行いました。

Under the direction of Nigatsu, participated in 1994, and Daisuke, participated in 1999, the event was proceeded. TAKANO Takako, executive director of ECOPLUS had a presentation about the situation of Yap and Kaohagan. OHMAE Jun-ichi, Manager of ECOPLUS, explained about it projects in Yap for sustainable future.

Based on the year of participation, we broke out into 18 sessions. Some were first time to join in such reunion but participants clearly identified each other with old memory and chatting were not easy to be stopped.

　参加した年などに分かれてのブレークアウトセッションは、全部で18。参加年、滞在場所など共通項で分かれてもらいました。90年代にプログラム参加して以来という人もいましたが、面影はそのまま。にぎやかな会話が続きました。

　再度の全体会では、ヤップ側からのメッセージをもらった後、4人の参加者がそれぞれの体験が今にどうつながっているかを発表してくれました。商社に勤めていまはオーストラリアに駐在する男性は、「ヤップで得られたのは相手を尊重し理解する姿勢。聞く力だと思う。世界観が違う相手と仕事をする時に役立っている。時代は、資本主義が自然との調和を取ろうとしていると感じている。この機会にヤップの経験者が知恵を出し合っていくのだ大事ではないか」と話してくれました。

In the second general session, messages from Yap were given then 4 ex-participants had short talk about their life after the program. One person working for a Japanese trading company stationed in Australia said “I leaned the way to hear the voice from the different culture in the program. It was the base for my life. Now the capitalism is seeking the harmonious relations with the nature. It might be the good time for the ex-participants to work together”.

　再度のブレークアウトセッションなどを経て、午後零時過ぎに公式行事は終了。その後も、半分前後が残っての2次会と続きました。

　画面には、子どもたちの顔があちこちに出てきました。まだ数カ月の赤ちゃんから中学生まで。30年で、世代がぐるっと一巡りしたことを感じさせました。

　「しあわせって何だろう」
　自然に近い暮らしの中で、何が真の豊かさかを考えることが、プログラムの目的でした。
　それぞれのみなさんが、しあわせとは何かをいまもしっかりと考えながら生きていることを感じた同窓会でした。

After another breakout session, the event was concluded in two hours and 15 minutes. After the official closing, still we had an half of the participants in the conference room and continued talking.

During the meeting faces of some month old babies to junior high children were repeatedly appeared. In these 30 years, a wave of one generation surely progressed.

“What is the true happiness?” This was the main common theme of our past programs. Through out the session, each person looks like living their life with this question in mind.
